Hob

An active RPM signal conditioner. The strong answer to LS swap tach problems.

A hob — short for hobgoblin — is a household spirit from British and Irish folklore that quietly tends to the hearth and keeps a home running right, so long as it's treated with respect. Get on its bad side and it turns mischievous. It's a fitting name for a device whose entire job is to take a signal that's misbehaving and quietly put it right.

LS swaps break tach signals in predictable ways: the pulse count doesn't match what a V8 gauge expects, the signal is too weak to register, or it's noisy enough to make the needle jump around. The usual advice is a pull-up resistor — it moves the needle, but it leaves the underlying signal problems in place and puts the PCM's output pin directly on the harness with no protection in between.

Hob is built to be the real answer instead: an active signal conditioner that takes a weak or wrong RPM signal in and puts out a clean, correctly-scaled signal your tach, shift light, or other RPM-dependent device can actually trust.

If you want the full technical case for why a pull-up resistor falls short, we wrote it up: Is a Pull-Up Resistor Enough for an LS Swap Tach Signal?

Running something other than an LS, or a signal source Hob isn't built around? Puca is our universal translator — any engine's tach signal, to any tach.
